Athletics, What’s Next Partner for Enrollment Event

Virginia Peninsula Community College athletics is holding its third annual One Stop event Thursday, July 25, from noon-4 p.m. in Kecoughtan Hall.

The event will allow potential student-athletes to finalize their enrollment process in one location and in one afternoon. In addition, VPCC is partnering this year with the What’s Next program, which assists community members interested in learning a skilled trades.

“It’s a good way to capture potential students who want to enter our Workforce program,” said athletics director Chris Moore.

On hand will be representatives from admissions, advising, financial aid, student accounts and the office of accessibility. In addition, potential students can learn about Single Stop, JumpStart/TRiO, Great Expectations, and The Shop, all programs that offer assistance to help students overcome barriers that impede their chances of success. VPCC’s athletic trainer will be on hand for student-athletes who need a physical.

What’s Next was founded by John Eley, a member of the Newport New City Council, and Ashby Kilgore, a VCCS board member and former superintendent of Newport News Public Schools. It provides job training and helps with job attainment through numerous government programs, including Virginia Ready, G3 and Fast Forward. Its focus is workforce and maritime opportunities.
